The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) provides an opportunity for individuals to make a commitment to the emergency readiness and response of our city.

 

CERT provides training in earthquake awareness, disaster fire suppression techniques, disaster medical operations, first aid/triage, light search and rescue as well as team organization and management. With an emphasis on hands-on practice, trained instructors guide participants through a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) course that covers basic skills that are important to know in a disaster when emergency services are not readily available.

 

CERT volunteers must complete an initial 25 hour basic training course. The team meets monthly to continue planning and preparing for deployment in the event of an actual disaster. Quarterly training and field exercises help the team practice and remain ready.

New training classes are offered every Spring and Fall. Classes typically meet one weekday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for seven weeks, followed by a Saturday field exercise.  If you can't attend every class, makeup classes are available. Space is limited to 25 participants.
